Star Wars Article
(Image via retroist.com)

There's currently an awesome piece up at the retroist.com (use the link below) that details the 1978 San Francisco Examiner article above. Why is this newpaper clipping so interesting? Well, read the last two paragraphs. Dave Prowse spoils one of the greatest movie moments in history... two years before "Empire" was even released!

Considering this was pre-internet (by a long shot), the piece seemingly never made headlines anywhere. Heck, it didn't even make the headline of the article itself as the clueless reporter buried it at the end of the piece. Can you imagine such a thing today? Heck, Twitter, Facebook and every blog on the planet would have been lit up like Christmas trees in mere minutes. Oh, how times have changed! 1978 was certainly a kinder, gentler age....

Huge kudos to the folks at the retroist for bringing this to light! Darth "Fader" rules!

Darth Vader Typography

When I was in junior high school, I had to take a class in typography and learn how to set type on a large printing press. While I certainly would be intrigued by such a neato activity as an adult, it was kind of lost on the thirteen year old, raging hormone version of me at the time. Setting type certainly wasn't cool back in 1987 when the only thing that mattered was who you were taking to the school dance.

Well, I guess that makes me appreciate these illustrations created by Italian agency H-57 Creative Station. The illustrations create Star Wars characters only using type. The Darth Vader above is created using Helvetica, Bodoni, Times, Rockwell and Bureau Empire -- sweet!

There's also Yoda and Stormtrooper illustrations... so hit the link below to check them out.

Millennium Falcon in Dubai

Recently, my boss went to Dubai, and when he returned he told me that there's cranes all over the skyline and construction as far as the eye can see. Well, seemingly this sparked the curiosity of French photographer, Cedric Delsaux, who mashed Star Wars into that very landscape. The results, which have been collected in a project called "Dark Lens: Dubai Invasion", are truly stunning!

CNN.com has posted an excellent piece about Delsaux's creation and has a feature interview with him. The pictures create and almost haunting reality... there's something post-apocalyptic and hyper-realistic to it. But needless to say, they elicit a reaction from everyone who sees them... so they're terrific art. Hit the link below to see more.

If you have a Star Wars fan in the house who loves Star Wars art... this is THE book to purchase them this Christmas (or maybe any Christmas). Trust me, as someone who has intimidate details of how this book was created, they will love you forever and ever!

The book, by J.W. Rinzler and from Abrams Publishing, was created at the specific request of George Lucas (who wrote the foreword) and features some of the world's greatest artists tackling Star Wars - most of them for the first time in their careers. All of the art was assembled and overseen by ACME Archives, Lucasfilm's fine art licensee. There are guaranteed to be pieces that will blow away any Star Wars fan.

The regular edition hardbound book is currently available from Amazon.com for $26.40 (on sale from $40) and also qualifies for free shipping right now. What a deal! There is also a limited edition collector's edition, which retails for $400 and includes five exclusive signed prints from the artists... but that edition looks to be sold out via Amazon.

This is one of the coolest videos we've seen in a while. Created by M2Film, it features a retelling of the Original Trilogy... but starring none other than Jar Jar as a janitor a-go-go on the original Death Star. Something purely amazing happens when combining the magic of Star Wars with the magic of Legos... they just seem to make each other better somehow.

Foxtrot Cartoon George Lucas

Bill Amend posted a really funny cartoon strip this Halloween that featured none other than "The Maker", George Lucas. Mr. Amend certainly makes his feelings known about the upcoming 3-D re-released of the saga! And yeah... the lumberjack jokes never get old!

West Virginia Senate candidate Joe Manchin has gone Star Wars crazy. His new smear campagin against his Republican rival uses Tie Fighters and Storm Troopers to drive his point home. Hey man, it's not out of line. Star Wars and Politics go together like Darth Vader and the Republic.
